Monday, August 26 Junior Hockey Update

For many, being a head coach is the epitome of a successful career. An opportunity to shape the minds and lives of young athletes offers a rewarding experience not many other professions can. At this time of year, coaches are working on players’ skills, team chemistry, and continuing to help players achieve their goals. All things that make coaching so rewarding for many.

It’s every young hockey player’s dream of being the next Sidney Crosby, Connor McDavid, or Alex Ovechkin, but it’s just not possible, there are only so many roster spots available as they advance. So as many players continue their hockey success, many also find that this is the end of the road. While a head coaches job is to lead their team to victory, it also involves delivering heartbreaking news to some.

Currently, the Dubuque Fighting Saints and Omaha Lancers have begun releasing their training camp rosters, and it’s only a matter of time before others follow.
Dubuque selected 13 returning players of the 31 overall, including one of the most feared lines around the league. Riese Gaber, Ty Jackson, and Dylan Jackson combined for 134 points in 185 games and will only look to improve upon those numbers this season. They’re also joined by two highly regarded NHL prospects, Stephen Halliday and Erik Portillo.

The Lancers training camp roster includes captain, Jack Randl, and in an interesting method, the Lancers have been tweeting out each player who has made the roster. There is no official statement yet, but more players will be announced in the coming days.

Waterloo also has some news to announce as they bring in Taylor Ward as their assistant coach. While Ward may be young, he brings valuable experience with him that he’s gained from several highly touted hockey organizations.

“Taylor has worked with a broad group of athletes in just a few years as a coach. We were glad to bring him to Waterloo because he has already done a little of everything. He’s a young man who can help us get to where we want to be at the same time, we can help him build an already impressive coaching resume”, said Black Hawks Head Coach and General Manager, P.K. O’Handley.

This week’s update wraps up with some special plans for the Tri-City Storm’s plans to celebrate their 20th Year Anniversary. Looking to build upon last year’s success, the Storm have high hopes for what could be their biggest, most memorable season yet!
